About Mrs. Terrell or Mrs. “T”
Mrs. Terrell’s primary instruments through grade school and most of college were the clarinet for concert literature and alto saxophone for jazz/marching band. Although through teaching she spends most of her time playing other instruments such and flute, trumpet, euphonium, and percussion. These instruments have sparked a strong interest in recent years and with each year teaching she strives to improve on a different instrument to better help her students. In College she was selected as a NAU drum major where she exemplified her leadership skills. She was the woodwind representative for NAU student adversary board and during the summer months at NAU has taught several auxiliary leaderships camps. In the summer months she has severed as a music director of the DVUSD “Music Rocks” camp 2009-2011. Currently, she is the woodwind tech and assistant to director Melanie Britton of the Sandra Day O’Connor Eagle Pride “State Campion 2014” marching band.
As for Mrs. Terrell personality she’s a strong willed, compassionate, amiable, and loving person. Most importantly when not working she enjoys spending quality time with her husband Jason, daughter Kimsey, and son Jason Jr. "JJ". A person’s family is the core to an individual in representing who they are. Over the years in her adult life since college Mrs. Terrell feels very blessed to have such a loving caring family at both home and in the classroom with her students.
Future Goals with the Titan Band
At Terramar it is Mrs. Terrell’s top priority to make the classroom environment that is safe, structured, organized, happy, friendly, and use technology based driven learning. Students will not only learn to improve their performance skills through playing music, but also focus on life skills and team building. Our program is very student driven, with each individual understanding what is expected to better the program and themselves. Students will be encouraged to practice, take private lessons, and work with the software program called “smart music”. It is Mrs. Terrell goal to eventually take a performing group from Terramar to the AMEA Arizona Music Education Association conference in the future and represent the Deer Valley Unified School District. With hard work from Students, Parents, and Administration this goal can become a reality.
By having a Superior band program here at Terramar the goal is help educate children, parents, colleges, and administers that Performing Arts is important in the well round education of children. Band, Choirs, Art, and Drama, should be treated as an equal to other subjects and remain in public education.
Teaching History
Mrs. Kimberly Terrell is a graduate of Northern Arizona University with a B.S. in secondary music education certified K-12. She student taught in Las Vegas Nevada under the direction of Dr. Rick McEnany and Mr. Philip Hanyes, and then moved back to Arizona to begin her career. Hired as the director at Paseo Hills in the DVUSD, she put eight years of hard dedicated work into building and maintaining an excelling band program. The PH band grew from a mere 20 members to 180 members and maintained the largest student enrollment in the district from 2007-2012. Despite being a Title One school with limited instrument inventory the band program had an average of 39-52 percent enrollment per grade level. In 2013 she became a Norterra Canyon Pirate and helped the student enrollment and achievement sore to new heights. Band enrollment increased to 34-45 percent per grade level in her short two year tenure and festival rating scores have reached the highest scores since the school opened. In 2015 Mrs. Terrell was asked to open DVUSD Sonoran Foothills. The Jazz ensemble has one the best in the state for the last couple years and the 7th & 8th grade Symphonic bands were among DVUSD's top performing programs with Superior score ratings. Now becoming a Terramar Titain Mrs. "T" plans to continue using her strengths to maintain a strong, large, excelling and fun filled band programs where children feel welcomed, safe, happy and successful.

All band students will need to have their working playable instrument and 1'' binder by the end of the first week of school.
Classroom Materials: The majority of all classroom instruction will require:
- Playable working instrument with an “ID” identification tag for example: Full name, contact info, and instrument serial number
- MUSIC FOLDER 7-8th & BINDER 5th & 6th: (fingering chart, glossary, scale sheet, warm up chorales and music, theory work sheets, and in class writing assignments
- A pencil with eraser
- A positive attitude & open mind
- A “Smart Music” Subscription is optional, but very beneficial for individual home practice & self tutoring.
Parents, please plan accordingly so your child is set up for success. Note AMAZON is the best place to order reeds and has the best price.
- Percussion Students need 5A wooden drumsticks, medium rubber mallets, and a stick bag
- Brass Students need valve oil and trombones need slide cream
- Reed playing Students clarinet and saxophone students need to have 3 bamboo working reeds or 2 synthetic “Legere” studio cut reeds at ALL times. Parents should buy their child a box of reeds each semester from a music store or online. Note often one synthetic “Legere” reed tends to last most of the semester and parents can typically get away with only having to purchase a couple for the school year and they do not harbor bacteria the way cane reed do.
clarinet reeds: “Mitchell Laurie” size 3, “Van Doran” size 2.5, or synthetic Legere size 2.50-2.75
saxophone reeds: “Rico Royal” size 2.5, Van Doran size 2, the synthetic brand Legere size 2
PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE RICO REEDS in the orange box. They may be cheaper, but the quality and cut of bamboo is VERY inconsistent and quality of sound is poor, which can often discourage players.

Dear Titan Families,
The new school year will be launching in August and we will be experiencing the joy of making music. Thank you for your support, and particularly for encouraging your child to continue their study of music. This investment of time, effort and energy will produce lifelong dividends.
Throughout the year you will be receiving communications regarding upcoming concerts and other pertinent information. I also will be sending you compelling research data about the importance of music study in the development of your child. The world of education is in a constant evolution and you, as a responsible and concerned parent, must be apprised of the latest information gleaned from research studies. This information will aid you in helping your child make wise choices that are certain to benefit their future.
Evidence continues to focus on the arts (music) as a vital component in the positive growth of every child. For years we have pointed to the music students as those who have demonstrated a special talent. However, based on extended studies we now know it is the very process of learning music that develops the artistic mind and brings forth the creative potential in all young people. For this reason, continued membership in our musical family is strongly encouraged. It is a privilege to have your child as a valued musician in our organization. Thank you for your support of music education at Terramar Academy of the Arts. You play an important role in everything we''ll be able to do. Welcome to our new school year!
Respectfully,
Kimberly Terrell
How Parents Can Help
How Parents Can Best Help Their Young Performer
1. Show an interest in your child’s musical endeavors and promote practice, even in the beginning, before they're consistently making beautiful sounds.
2. Find a private instructor for your child to study with. Please check with Mrs. Terrell before committing to an instructor. Some private tutors are better than others! Go to the band website for a list of excellent private instructors.
3. Arrange a regular time for your child to practice with no interruptions and remember “Perfect practice makes perfect”. Proper utilization of time is beneficial for everyone.
4. Help your child keep a record of their practice routine and habits. Good practice involves a good warm-up with technical studies (scales, arpeggios, etc.), a review of current music being studied, intense isolation of difficult sections in the music, and exposure to new material. If they are merely playing through the music and ignoring those parts of the music that are challenging, they will feel no sense of accomplishment. It is important that they develop a routine they can stick with.
5. Make sure they have a safe consistent place to store their instrument at home.
6. Keep the instrument in good repair (clean and working properly) and make sure they have all the supplies they need to be successful (good reeds, cork grease, valve oil, mutes, etc.)
7. Be VERY careful with both school- and privately-owned instruments. Repairs can be costly and instruments should not be left out and/or unattended.
8. Encourage your child to play for others when the opportunity arises, for example: A birthday for a relative “Grandma”, holiday seasons, in the home, in church, at school, or for community events.
9. Make sure you know your child’s schedule of performances and other school events, and make sure they’re on time.
10. See that they always remember to bring their playable, working instrument with all needed materials to be successful for class.
11. See that they keep up with their classroom studies. Your involvement and support can make a huge difference.
12. Attend performances whenever possible. Children may not verbalize their gratitude but they truly appreciate your attendance.
13. Donate up to $ 400 of your state taxes to the district in the name of the Terramar Band. This is a dollar for dollar tax credit, with every penny going directly into the program. A donation form is available on the school and district website.
4th Grade General Music
The Pre-Band Experience
An integral part of the curriculum is the Fourth Grade Instrumental Exploratory program. All fourth graders will have a full year of hands-on instrumental training with one quarter each on the clarinet, flute, percussion and trumpet. We have a terrific time enjoying the beautiful sounds we produce!!
Students will be provided all materials and individual mouthpieces for clarinet and trumpet. These mouthpieces will be sanitized after each use in a highly concentrated sanitizing solution. During the clarinet unit, students will be provided one bamboo/cane reed and if it breaks and is no longer playable, students may purchase a new one for $2.00 or serve a lunch detention helping Mrs. Terrell as payment for the replacement reed. During the percussion unit, if drum sticks or mallets need to be replaced the cost will be $10.00. Students will be held accountable for all materials in an effort to help DVUSD maintain these expensive instruments and teach the importance of accountability.
The students will learn musical notation and basic theory as they learn the basics of each instrument. At the end of the year, those students wishing to participate in band in fifth grade will have a specific instrument(s) recommended to them based upon their performance in the exploratory classes. This year-long process helps to assure the student's success in beginning band by combining a solid foundation of notation reading and matching the child with the instrument most suited to them.
Another exciting event for the 4th graders is our field trip to the Musical Instrument Museum in May. Students and parents enjoy the docent-led tour through the instruments of different countries, ending with the hands-on Experience Gallery (shown in the slides below.)

Tax Credit Facts
Anyone with or without children, married or single, is eligible for this unprecedented state tax credit. The $400 maximum state tax credit is available for taxpayers who are married and filing jointly. A husband and wife who file separate returns for a taxable year in which they could have filed a joint return may each claim only $200. For a single individual or a head of household, the tax credit is $200. A state tax credit will allow you to reduce the amount of your tax liability to the state or increase your refund from the state. If you donate the maximum $400, your Arizona tax bill would be $400 less or your refund would be $400 more. You may donate less than $400 and be eligible to receive the state tax credit in the amount of your donation. The amount you donate (up to $400) will be the amount you may claim as a state tax credit. You may split your $400 donation among more than one public school, but will still qualify for a maximum state credit of $400. Your donation also reduces your taxable income to the federal government, thereby reducing your tax burden to the federal government usually by 1/3 of the donation amount. For information, call the Deer Valley District Office at 623-445-5000 or 24-hour voicemail at 623-445-4935.
