Welcome to Fifth Grade! 

We are so excited to be a part of you and your child's fifth grade experience. 

Mission Statement

In fifth grade, we are here to train our minds to learn and become successful.  We can do this by communicating, persevering, and working cooperatively.  We will accomplish our goals by believing in ourselves, being respectful, and building a better mindset.

The objectives we will be focusing on in 5th grade are as follows:

Unit 1:  Whole Number Operations and Applications: Volume, Multiplication and Division 

Unit 2:  Decimals and Fractions: Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction 

Unit 3:  More Decimals and Fractions: Multiplication and Division 

Unit 4:  Measurement, Data, and Geometry: Converting Units, Using Data, and Classifying Figures 

Unit 5:  Algebraic Thinking and the Coordinate Plane: Expressions, Graphing Points, Patterns and Relationships

• Informational and Fictional Texts

We will be studying the following topics in each quarter:

Quarter 1 - Matter

• Analyzing and Interpreting Data
• Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
  • Analyze and interpret data to explain that matter of any type can be subdivided into particles too small to see and, in a closed system, if properties change or chemical reactions occur, the amount of matter stays the same.
  • Plan and carry out investigations to demonstrate that some substances combine to form new substances with different properties and others can be mixed without taking on new properties.

Quarter 2 - Force and Motion

• Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
• Analyzing and Interpreting Data
• Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information
• Asking Questions and Defining Problems
  • Construct an explanation using evidence to demonstrate that objects can affect other objects even when they are not touching
  • Obtain, analyze, and communicate evidence of the effects that balanced and unbalanced forces have on the motion of objects.
  • Define problems and design solutions pertaining to force and motion.
  • Analyze and interpret data to determine how and where energy is transferred when objects move.

Quarter 3 - Earth/Moon

• Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
• Developing and Using Models
• Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information
  • Construct an explanation using evidence to demonstrate that objects can affect other objects even when they are not touching
  • Develop, revise, and use models based on evidence to construct explanations about the movement of the Earth and Moon within our solar system.
  • Obtain, analyze, and communicate evidence to support an explanation that the gravitational force of Earth on objects is directed toward the planet’s center.

Quarter 4 - Adaptations and Environments

• Obtaining, Evaluating and Communicating Information
• Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions
• Engaging in Argument from Evidence
  • Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about patterns between the offspring of plants, and the offspring of animals (including humans); construct an explanation of how genetic information is passed from one generation to the next
  • Construct an explanation based on evidence that the changes in an environment can affect the development of the traits in a population of organisms.
  • Obtain, evaluate, and communicate evidence about how natural and human-caused changes to habitats or climate can impact populations.
  • Construct an argument based on evidence that inherited characteristics can be affected by behavior and/or environmental conditions.
